Review of The Fisherman's Son

By Tracy Farnsworth, Roundtable Reviews:

Marilyn Peake launches her debut with a fast paced offering that contains excellent imagery amidst a coming of age story. THE FISHERMAN'S SON shows that she is an author to watch as her writing further develops in future tales.

Twelve-year-old Wiley O'Mara adores his mother, and sadly as she is dying, he is the only one to care for her. His father, a local fisherman, turns to the bottle far too often. After Wiley's mother becomes very ill, he does his best to care for her.

However, his best isn't enough to save her.

Wiley sets off to a distant town to ask the closest preacher to hold a burial service. Along the way through the dangerous woods, Wiley meets a woman who gives him a goblet. This goblet will eventually take Wiley to a whole new world, one that's long lost under the ocean. Wiley teams up with a friendly dolphin and depends on his courage to complete what seems like an impossible rescue mission.

THE FISHERMAN'S SON will appeal to readers both young and old. From the first page, I felt incredible compassion for young Wiley. He finds himself in a tough situation and strives to handle matters in an adult manner.

This relatively quick read is a perfect offering for those who  love fantasy. Be sure to check out Roundtable Reviews' interview with Marilyn Peake as well!
